The men from the Sri Lankan Army proved they were the better armed force on the volleyball court when they prevailed over the Air Force team to claim the Munchee National Volleyball Championship at the Sugathadasa indoor stadium yesterday.

Army, who are the tournament’s defending champions, claimed the match with a final score of 25-23, 18-25, 36-34, 26-24. As the scoreboard reveals the encounter was a closely contested affair with 3 of the game’s four sets going right down to the wire.
In the first set Army were trailing early, thanks to some powerful spiking by Air Force however they managed to stage an impressive recovery and rallied back to claim the set.
Although this pegged Air Force back they refused to be second best in front of a vociferous crowd which constantly egged them on and they immediately struck back to claim the second set 18-25.
The third set was the hardest fought of the match with both teams trading powerful scoring strikes. Eventually, however, the Air Force volleyball players wilted and lost the set 36-34.
Coming into the fourth set, Army seemed determined to end things as quickly as possible but they found themselves unable to shake the tenacious Air Force side. At 25-24 Army launched an emphatic spike to seal things.
In the women’s final Sri Lanka Ports Authority beat Youth Service Casualline 22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 21-25. |
