Isuru Kariyawasam rescued Sri Jayewardenapura MV with a knock of 55 after St. Thomas’ right arm spinner Gihan Benedict had wrecked the inning in the morning session of play in their annual 34th Battle of Kotte big match which began at Braybrooke Place yesterday.
Sri Jayewardenapura MV taking first lease of the wicket was in dire straits as Gihan with a four wicket haul sent them reeling to 84 for 7 at lunch. Isuru in the post lunch session came to their rescue by putting on two valuable stands - first of 48 for the eighth wicket with Dulaj Madusanka and the other of 50 for the ninth wicket with Yohan Vanhoff - helping them to reach 181 for 9 before declaring.
Gihan along with left arm spinner Pradeep Ananda were their top wicket takers with the duo sharing eight wickets between them. St. Thomas Kotte in their turn ended the day making 52 for 2. The match will be continued at 9.45 a.m. today.
