COLOMBO COLOMBO: The Story of Your Coffin, (a play in Sinhala) brings to the stage the darker social issues that occur across the island. A tragi-comedy, the play consists of four episodes that take place at four different locations in Colombo. Each episode will be linked by the characters in the story.
The story opens with the discovery of a mud and blood smeared diary with missing pages on the pavement. As the play proceeds the events that were recorded on the missing pages are revealed.
Theatre Plus, the group behind the play say, “In the first three episodes, the relationships of three pairs of lovers conclude in a state of uncertainty that no longer allows them to accept each other’s presence in their life.
In the fourth episode we find two old men at a funeral parlour, waiting for the corpse of a young woman, for she is the only sexual gratification they can afford.”
Stringing the episodes together is the character Vyanga. “The plight of these Vyangas who are lovers to different men, even after death” a Theatre Plus player says, “draws attention to the impending dangers present in every woman’s life.”
The cast of the play consists of Saumya Liyanage, Anasuya Subasinghe, Jagath Chamila, Sarath Karunaratne, Thilanka Gamage, Atula Jayasinghe, Upul Weerasinghe and Sanjeevani Rathnathilaka. The playwright and director is Indika Ferdinando and music composition is by Theja Buddhika Rodrigo, both of whom have received several awards for their work.
Having first performed the play in August 2009, the group was invited to stage it at the South Asian Women’s Theatre Festival held in New Delhi and Mumbai, India earlier this year.
