By Jeevendra Bandara Ranasinghe

As an ardent gadget fan I'm always browsing through sites looking for the coolest. These gadgets below are a few to watch out for. solar charger for laptops and other gizmos I came across this solar charger on the popular Chinese electronic site, Chinavision.com.

The charger is equipped with a 20,000 mAh battery which takes approximately 8 hours to be charged by solar power. Most importantly cloudy rainy days will not render this solar charger useless. Users can charge the battery by plugging it to AC which takes only three hours to top the battery. Also you can plug this in to the cigarette lighter in cars.

Twenty nine adapter tips are included for charging phones, laptops, iPods, mp3 players, digital cameras, video game players and much more, are included. If you’re a gadget geek loaded with gadgets, which will make the metal detectors within a mile go off, this, is good news for you.

With this solar charger, you don’t have to shelve dozens of chargers for your gizmos. According to Chinavision, 15 of 29 charger tips are compatible with most laptop models, including ASUS, HP, Samsung, Acer/T1, Dell, IBM, NEC, Toshiba, Sony brands. The rest is compatible with many other digital products.

To charge all you have to do is set the output voltage and plug in the device. The output voltage range from USB (5V), 3V, 6V, 9V, 12V, 16V, 19V, 22V, 24V, making it compatible with 99% of stuff we use. According to Chinavision the battery is capable of powering a laptop for whole day.

Priced at $148.04 (Rs. 17,000.00) each, plus one year warranty, this solar charger is small in size with only 205mm x 282mm x 18mm. The battery weighs approximately 700g. All in all, the entire thing is around 1.5 kg. A carrying bag is also included for convenience of the traveller.

An iPad which is not really an iPad

At the beginning of this year the gadget loving community around the world were buzzing with enthusiasm about the iPad. As of May 2010, since its release in April, Apple has sold 1million devices worldwide. And the base model of the iPad is priced at US$499!!

But if you don’t want to spend such a lot, you can buy an Eken M001 tablet PC from Shenit.com. It has similar features of an iPad except for the 3G support. It comes with Wi-Fi, 7” TFT touch screen, 600 MHz ARM processor, 128 DDR RAM, 2GB inbuilt flash drive and runs with Google Android 1.6! The memory can be increased by using the SD/ MMC card expansion slot, which is not a feature that comes with the original Apple iPad.

Since we Sri Lankans are new to Google’s Android OS, this would be a cheaper way to experience what this is all about. The touch screen 800 x 480 px resolution is equipped with an accelerometer (which rotates the display) and an ambient light sensor. A navigation dial also exists. The inbuilt battery lasts for about 2 to 3 hours with regular usage.

To access the internet you can connect by Wi-Fi or through the Ethernet 10/100M port provided. The software bundle includes Google Chome-lite Browser, Document to Go (Word, Excel, PPT, PDF), Android Task Killer and AndExplorer (Android’s free file manager). This device also doubles as an eBook reader.

This tablet PC is suitable for simple tasks and for simple internet use. Originally priced at $199.99, Eken M001 is offered at a special price of $119.99 and comes with a 12 month warranty.
