A farmer was killed by a wild elephant this week while several houses were destroyed by wild elephant attacks at the Gonaganara 16th mile post in Raja Mawatha in the Buttala-Kataragama area.
The victim was a seventy eight year old farmer identified as S.D. Piyasena.
Villagers complain of poor maintenance of electrified fences erected to prevent wild elephants entering the Buttala-Kataragama area from the Yala National Park. As these fences do not function properly wild elephants enter the villages and create havoc, they said.
Villagers call for officials to resolve the issue immediately thereby protecting the lives and property of the people in bordering villages. |
