These arrests were made following a special operation conducted by seventy officers of the Traffic Police Division of the Kandy police.
The pedestrians were monitored at 15 spots in Kandy town.
“Those who were arrested by police officers were told to be present in courts on July 16”, Kandy Traffic Police OIC Gamini Meegammana said.
Those found guilty could be ordered to pay a fine of up to Rs. 750.
However, pedestrians complained that this operation without prior notice caused much inconvenience to the people of the town and stated that the Police should have paid more attention to the reasons why people walk on the roads instead of using pavements.
They said that the pavements are taken over by hawkers and vehicles parked on the pavements thereby denying their use by pedestrians.
Private institutions distributed handbills creating awareness among the public on road rules. |
