The Oriental Music Society of Trinity College originated with a humble beginning back in 1986, to stand before us today as one of Trinity's most active and successful student bodies, proud and confident, as it steps into its 24th successful year of service to the College.
The pioneer in laying the strong foundation from which this Society rose up was none other than one of our past principals, Rev. Dr. W.G.Wickramasinghe. It was he who took the momentous decision to introduce oriental music to the school curriculum and to appoint a new teacher; Mr. Upul Edirisinghe to teach the subject. Rev. Wickramasinghe supported the new teacher in every possible way, providing a permanent building to house the Oriental Music Section of the School, and also taking the necessary steps to supply many valuable musical instruments.
The newly conceived society quickly rose to an important position in school activities. This was largely due to the ability, enthusiasm and dedication of the music master. This growing success resulted in a large number of students opting to study oriental music as their aesthetic subject and also showing great eagerness to join the Oriental Music Society.
The first president was Master Suranjaya Darmadasa. Master Niluka Amarasinghe was the first Vice President.
