Gateway College, Colombo's female athletes dominated a host of events at the recently concluded Western Province Athletic Championship to comprehensively claim the Girls Overall Championship
Minethi Karunawardena (Under 11), Ruwanthi Ferdinandes (Under 17) and Udara Ratnayake (Under 21) all emerged champions of their respective age groups.
The school's achievement is perhaps strengthened by the fact that they lacked one of their key athletes, Nadeeshani Henderson. Henderson is a national athlete and holder of the "Gateway Dove"-the school's highest award for sports. She was unable to participate in the Athletic Championships because she was away on national duty.
The meet's runners up were Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya who stood just nine points ahead of Ladies College. Other schools that finished strong were Ave Maria Negombo, Musaeus College, Visakha Vidyalaya, Methodist College and St. Bridget's Convent. |
