Nihal Wickramarathne’s exhibition ‘Rhythm of Heritage’ will be held at the Alliance francaise de kandy from October 15 to 22.
Nihal spent his early childhood at Meegahakiula in the Badulla district and subsequently in Anuradhapura where he was awed by the cultural heritage of this ancient city. Having studied in the science stream in school (Science College, Matale), he was posted as an executive in a government corporation after completion of his studies.
He soon returned to his childhood passion of painting and now resides in Kandy where he draws inspiration from the scenic and culturally rich environment.
Nihal was fortunate to learn under Kala Bhooshana Pushpananda Weerasinghe, the renowned sculptor and painter, where his natural talent as an artist was moulded and honed into maturity under the expert’s watchful eye.
He learnt the art of water colouring under the able guidance of M.D.S. Gunatillake, an award-winning water colour artist and further improved in portrait painting and pastel work with the late P.S.P.
Jayatillake, the former Art Director of “Sinhala Encyclopaedia”. He has learnt figure drawing and painting under Chandraguptha Thenuwara, at “Vibhavi Academy of Fine Arts”. Nihal uses water colours, oil, acrylic and pastel as well as charcoal with equal ease. Sometimes he strives not to use traditional colours and uses a little clay or powdered lime stone and finishes off the work with the aid of a sponge or piece of cloth rather than the brush.
He has formed an Art Foundation to help young children to learn and appreciate art by organizing exhibitions, competitions and workshops. |
