A SMS-centred mobile application development website www.appzone.lk, which was jointly created by the Sri Lankan office of UAE-based mobile provider Etisalat and local software developer hSenid, has so far yielded applications or “apps” which allow users to "locate all of Sri Lanka's cab service phone numbers" and "access island wide train time-route schedules as per the Railway department", according to a statement by the mobile company.
The statement also noted that the SMS-based application which provides phone numbers for all taxi can services, known as mCabs, was the first sample application received at the website. It also suggested the entire development process for mCabs took two weeks.
Meanwhile, according to a quote in the statement which was attributed to fourth-year University of Peradeniya Computer Science student, Asanka Ishara; the developer of the railway timetables application: "Once the idea was in place, the execution was immensely simple- all I had to do was gather the technical back ground from the online AppZone forum and follow instructions... having learnt of this opportunity from the AppZone team that visited our university, I was able to stay in touch with them via Facebook, thereby receiving constant guidance." |
