Mattakkuliya is a fast developing Colombo suburb, but it has no Main Post Office. An Agency Post Office was opened recently, but abruptly and mysteriously shut down a week later.
The town has a large and fast-growing population, and it is fast developing as a commercial centre, with a number of shops and businesses. But there is no Main Post Office.
To get to the nearest Post Office, you have to go to Modera (old Mutwal), which is more than six kilometres away.
Meanwhile, wayside boutiques are doing brisk business selling postage stamps at black market rates.
It should also be mentioned that Mattakkuliya is dotted with old and defaced pillar boxes. Most residents avoid dropping letters into these pillar boxes because they look garbage containers.
