Japanese conductor Keiko Kobayashi will conduct the Symphony Orchestra’s Premiere Concert on October 31 at the Ladies’ College Hall. This concert will feature Dushy Perera, performing Dvorak’s Cello Concerto and Ado Kihara, from Japan, performing Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 1.
Keiko Kobayashi will be conducting the SOSL for the third successive year. She has developed an amazing rapport with the musicians of the SOSL and is able to create an energy that explodes under her baton. Having studied under some renowned conductors such as Seiji Ozawa, Keiko has gone on to conduct many Japanese orchestras during the past six years.
She continues to enhance her conducting skills and recently was the recipient of the 1st prize at the Boswil International Conducting Master Class Switzerland in 2009.
Dushy Perera, the principal cellist of the SOSL and more recently the principal cellist of the Bombay Chamber Orchestra, will return to the solo stage to perform the Dvorak Cello Concerto, probably the greatest ever written for the instrument.
The concerto was written by Dvorak during his stay in New York and was inspired by his experience there. It is a mix of the vibrant, youthful energy of New York and Dvorak’s nostalgia for his homeland.
Composers were often inspired by the virtuosity of a musician who they felt were both capable of and willing to play their music. Carl Maria Von Weber was no exception and his Clarinet Concerti were dedicated to Heinrich Joseph Baermann, one of the greatest clarinetists of the early nineteenth century.
The SOSL concert will also see the premiere performance of El Salon Mexico, a “musical potpourri” of Mexican Folk tunes, composed by Aaron Copland after visiting a colourful dance hall in Mexico City.
The fourth piece of the evening’s programme is Samuel Barber’s Adagio for strings. This is one of the most moving pieces of the 20th century and has been used for many memorial concerts, including that of the composer himself.
Japan Foundation is sponsoring SOSL for the second year enabling the Japanese musicians to perform in Colombo while Asian Alliance Insurance, the local sponsor is supporting the orchestra for the 5th year.
