Israel has offered employment opportunities paying high salaries ranging from Rs. 110,000 to Rs. 120,000 in the agriculture sector for 300 Sri Lankan youth. Honorary Consul for Israel in Sri Lanka, Wicky Wickramatunga told the Business Times that, for the first time a batch of 300 Sri Lankan agricultural workers were provided employment in Israel.
This opportunity came Sri Lanka's way subsequent to a pilot project launched by the governments of both countries. This is the first time that a large batch of workers found employment opportunities in Israel in one batch, he said.
Eli Belotsercovsky – Israeli Deputy Chief of Mission based in India visited Sri Lanka recently to attend a ceremony to send off the batch of 300 Sri Lankan workers to Israel. He told the gathering that entrepreneurs in Israel in the agricultural sector are treated in high esteem in society. He expressed optimism that the recruitment of Sri Lankan workers would help salvage the upcoming crop season,
The project is being coordinated between the governments of Israel and Sri Lanka and the Geneva-based International Organization for Migration. He said that the Israel agriculture pattern changes every six months and Sri Lanka workers would be provided employment for six months and if they perform well they will be called back again in six months.
Farm mechanization and use of appropriate machinery and appliances, minimizing post harvest losses are very advanced in Israel and Sri Lankans can learn these techniques from them and even set up their own business in Sri Lanka, Mr . Wickramatunga said. He said this agreement has been formulated in such a way that the social fabric of the country would not have any negative impacts and provide employees with more security and benefits. |
