With the forthcoming Cricket World Cup making the Decision Review System (DRS) mandatory, Sri Lanka Cricket is very keen to activate the same for the West Indies series which will be Sri Lanka’s last international engagement before the big one in February.
However Ten Sports who are the TV Sponsors of the series have refused to foot the bill for DRS.
Secretary SLC Nishantha Ranatunga speaking of the issue told the Sunday Times “It’s a sticky situation as the agreed amount for the whole West Indies tour is 350,000 US Dollars and the DRS would cost us nearly a 100,000 U$. Nevertheless the ICC is also very keen to see that the system is in place in Sri Lanka for the series and are willing to give us 25% of the cost. They are also looking out for a sponsor along with us who could come up with the balance 75% and then work with Ten Sports seeking what sort of benefits that they could offer in return. Anyway we are hoping to finalise the issue by next week”.

Sri Lanka was one of the very first countries to use the DRS during their 2008 series against India, and were also very successful at it. On the other hand India who were at the receiving end became one of the biggest opponents of the system and up to date are rather skeptic of it.
SLC congratulates Lankan team
Meanwhile the interim committee of Sri Lanka Cricket congratulated the Sri Lanka Cricket team on their historical win over Australia which also signifies the first ever series win by a Sri Lankan team in Australia.
It said “The margins of the two victories and the manner in which they were achieved in the first and second ODI s against the Australians clearly demonstrates the fact that the Sri Lankan Team is currently playing top quality cricket while giving the strong Australian team a highly competitive competition and we thank the entire cricket team for their sterling performance and wish them the very best at the final ODI scheduled to be played on Sunday.” |
