Iron horses flying

By David Stephens

All the awestruck faces that were jammed into a floodlit Galle Face Green waited with eager anticipation as each one of the Red Bull X Fighter Jams riders rode past the ramp. By the time the first of them flew acrobatically through the air, with the show just 15 minutes old, it was clearly evident that the first Freestyle Motocross Stunt event in Sri Lanka had delivered what it promised.

For a few frightening moments however the fun and excitement quickly morphed into a deep sense of terror as one of the four riders miscued his landing, getting thrown awkwardly off his motorbike across several meters of dirt. As the crowd waited with bated breath, the rider stood up and waved reassuringly before riding off back into the riding tent.

Barring this incident the whole event was a huge success, with the whole crowd being thoroughly entertained throughout the entire two hours. The show itself was divided into three segments, with each portion raising the bar of improbability until it stood at the dizzying height to which each rider soared.

When they first launched off the ramp they held themselves back just enough, so that the large audience would always remain expectant before the next round, predicting the impossible.

Indeed it was the impossible that each of the four men brought, utilizing handle bar handstands and other aerial acrobatics which saw their hands, legs and whole bodies flailing in all directions.

In the second and third rounds of high flying action, the riders busted out the heavy artillery, throwing themselves into full somersaults across either ramp.

Though one of these unfortunately resulted in the accident, it did not stop the remaining three riders from continuing to go all out for an audience that continued to applaud in the encroaching darkness.
