Pin Fernando Golf Grand Prix from April 26

W.P. Fernando

It is three decades hence that Warusahennedige Pinsiripal Fernando, better know to the business and sporting fraternity of the Indian subcontinent as Pin, fell another victim of that dreaded ailment cancer.

His prowess on the golf courses in Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan was well admired by the golfing fraternity in the golden years soon after the end of the World War in 1945 right up to 20th July 1969 when he won his 10th and final Sri Lanka Title adding to his tally of 51 Championship titles including 2 Indian National titles, and giving himself a fitting 45th birthday present.

This year to mark the 30th anniversary of his death on 27th March 1981, his family have agreed to sponsor the inauguration of a Grand Prix for all National and Development Squad Players and any other Sri Lankan golfers interested in obtaining a Sri Lanka ranking for the year.

The event will be titled Pin Fernando Golf Grand Prix – Sri Lanka and will be played once a month over four consecutive daily rounds starting from 26th April 2011 at the Royal Colombo Golf Club.

This Grand Prix will be conducted by the SLGU. The ranking will change according to the scores after each event with points earned by the top 10 players of each event. The player with the most number of points after 12 events will be the winner of the Pin Fernando Golf Grand Prix – Sri Lanka.
There will be prizes for the 1st three places of each monthly tournament.
