One of Sri Lanka’s living cricket legends – Duleep Mendis who has served the cause of the game in the island in almost all possible capacities (He even is engaged as an expert analyst of the 2011 World Cup over a local radio) is billed to take over as the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team manager with immediate effect.

According to a very senior spokesman of the of the SLC Interim Committee Mendis who last served the board as its Chief Executive Office before retiring from that post has agreed to serve in this capacity.
Mendis, an original product of St. Sebastian’s College Moratuwa later went onto lead S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia, Sri Lanka Under 20 captain, member of the Sri Lanka cricket team and its captain, Sri Lanka Cricket coach, Chief Selector, National Cricket Manager, Cricket Development Manager and Chief Executive officer after this.
Besides this he appeared for Sri Lanka in the inaugural Cricket World Cup in 1975 and then went to be a member of the 1979 squad and was the captain of the 1983 and 1987 World Cups teams.
Mendis will take the reins of the ‘A’ team from 1st April.
Sri Lanka’s next ‘A’ team assignment will be their tour of the United Kingdom in July-August while there is a move that the West Indian second stringers will tour Sri Lanka on October-November 2011. |
