The restraining order issued by Judge Sanka Jayathilake will be active for 14 days commencing from June 17 which shuns Hettiarachchi from playing for Kandy SC during the ongoing Caltex League rugby season.
Wing-three-quarter Hettiarachchi crossed over to Kandy SC from Navy Sports Club before the commencement of this year’s club season sighting his contract has been expired.
In an interview with a local English daily few weeks ago, Hettiarachchi sighted that he will ‘return home’ to Kandy and had already signed the contract papers with the Hill Capital club.
However in response to the news article Navy SC said that Hettiarachchi was still a member of its Voluntary Unit to which the player had said that his contract with them (Navy SC) has already expired by May 23, 2011.
According to informed sources Hettiarachchi’s former club, the Navy SC has sought legal guidance which resulted with a restraining order on him.
When the Sunday Times contacted an official of the Navy SC rugby team for further details he declined to comment.
“The sports club does not handle recruitment processes or contract with the players. Those areas are managed by our administrators, so I really do not know what exactly is happening to give a clear comment,” said Petty Officer Kaluarachchi, the manager of Navy SC.
According to Kapila Silva, the manager of Kandy SC, the Colombo District Court will take up the case on June 23. “Our legal team will take care of the proceedings. From what we gathered out of Nuwan (Hettiarachchi), he has not violated anything that is against the contract signed with his former club. It’s up to the Court to give the final verdict. We will have to wait and see,” Silva said. |
