Gihan Suwaris won the Boy’s under-19 special plate title at the Milo All Star Junior Squash Championship held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Along with Suwaris, Dilrukshi Elikewela won the under-17 girl’s plate title at the same event.

Suwaris beat Raja Adam of Malaysia by 3-2 in a thrilling final played for the special plate championship. He won the first set by 11-9 but Adam bounced back to win the second and third sets by 11-8 and 11-7 to dominate the crucial final. Experienced Suwaris then retaliated to grab the remaining couple of sets to seal the game and win the title comfortably by 11-4 and 11-8. In the same category Sri Lankan Manuran Patabendi also competed but was eliminated after the first round.
Suwaris, a past student of S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia presently represents the Sri Lanka Air Force squash team. Elikewela, a student of Musaeus College, Colombo beat fellow compatriot Sandalie Gomes by straight sets to record a comfortable win and grab the plate championship. She successively won the sets by 11-6, 11-1 and 11-3 to outclass inexperience Gomes out of contention.
The semi-finals of this competition however saw four Sri Lankans fighting for supremacy. In the first semifinal Elikewela beat Minoshi Balasuriya while in the second encounter Gomes took the better off Kavini Amarasekara to enter the final.
Nearly 30 Sri Lankan squash players took part representing at five different age categories for boys and girls at the Milo All Star Junior Squash Championship which was held in Malaysia from May 30 to June 5.
