The Sri Lanka Schools age group rugby tournaments organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) and sponsored by Milo will kick off on June 24. Under its list nine competitions have been scheduled during the period of four months which will come to an end in October.
The first competition under its belt will begin with the Under-18 all island Division I tournament which will be worked off on June 24 and 25 at Longdon Place. The next in line will be the Under-18 all island Division II tournament.
It was originally scheduled to be played at the Vincent Dias stadium in Badulla but due to unavoidable circumstances the venue might be changed. “The tournament is scheduled for July 2 and 3 at Badulla but our representative there had informed us that the venue is not in a suitable condition to be used. We are looking at hosting the tournament in Koggala, Galle but that decision will be made during next week when the officials meet up,” said Susantha Mendis, the secretary of SLSRFA.
According to Mendis, the Chairman’s Trophy segment knockout rugby tournament played among the Under-20 Division I ‘C’ schools will be played in advance due to the constrain of time. “By the time the Youth Asiad and the ongoing league tournament complete the schedule will be tight to conduct three tournaments for different categories. So we decided to conduct the Under-20 Chairman’s Trophy knockout tournament earlier than scheduled. The dates are not finalized but the competition will begin on the first week of July and complete within 10 days,” Mendis added.
The tournament is scheduled to be played at Longdon Place. However the usual Under-20 knockout competitions for the President and Premier Trophies will be conducted as scheduled from September 5 to 25.
“The dates might shift a bit but the tournament will finish with the finals on September 25,” he further said.
In addition to the main competitions, other tournaments of Under-12, 14, 16 and the all island girls are scheduled to take place. Most of the competition venues are drafted for Sabaragamuwa, Kurunegala and Galle in addition to Colombo in an attempt to promote rugby towards the rural according to Mendis. |
