Prince of Wales begin season with thrilling win

Prince of Wales began their Under 19 inter-school cricket season with a thrilling eight wicket win over Dharmasoka Ambalangoda in the match concluded at Moratuwa yesterday.

Prince of Wales chasing a score of 142 runs in 16 overs set by Dharmasoka reached the target in just 13.4 overs. The architect of the victory was a 92 runs second wicket stand between Ashen Mendis and Kusal Mendis.

Ashen made an unbeaten 69 which included six boundaries and four towering sixes while Kusal chipped in with a quick fire 37 that comprised five boundaries and a six.

Earlier in the day Prince of Wales resuming from their overnight score of 70 for 1 went on to make 231 for 8 before declaring with Ashen Mendis cracking 78 inclusive of nine boundaries and a six.
This was in reply to Dharmasoka's score of 228. Dharmasoka batting the second time going in for quick runs made a score of 144 for declared.

Zahira record second win
At Maradana Zahira recorded their second outright win with a crushing innings and 55 runs win over Dharmapala.

Dharmapala taking first lease of the wicket were bowled out for 101 with Zahira in reply making a formidable score of 260 for 6 declared with Imras Rafi (67) and Mohamed Basith (63) being the top scorers.

Dharmapala batting the second time with a deficit of 159 runs were again restricted to a score of 104 which saw them undergoing their second defeat for the season.

Ranarajah 62
Meanwhile second days play in the match between Wesley and St Anthony's Katugastota at Campbell Park got off only at 2.00 p.m. with St Anthony's resuming from their overnight score of 33 for 2 going on to make 200 with Kanishka Ranarajah making a top score of 62 and Sachin Jayawardena ending with top figures of 4 for 45 for Wesley.

Rajans trounce Sri Sumangala Panadura
Two brilliant individual performances by Nuwan Karunaratne (9 for 52) and Denith Lanka (96 with 11 fours and a six) helped Dharmaraja to trounce Sri Sumangala Panadura by an innings and 38 runs in their Under 19 tournament match in Kandy yesterday.

The Rajans ran up a healthy total and then the bowlers got to work to dismiss the opponents for 144 and 73.
Nuwan Karunaratne, the right arm medium fast medium bowler, recorded his best figures with 9 for 52.

Several Stellar performances
The Inter-school match between St. Sylvester's and Maliyadeva played at the Open Prison Ground in Pallekelle though drawn contained several stellar performances.
Sylvestrians took the first innings lead thanks to a fine spell of leg spin bowling by Dushan Malalasena (6 for 65 ), left arm spinners Sumedha Dissanayake ( match bag 6 for 64) and Nimesh Mendis (4 for 85) also played key roles. The Sylvestrian batting was all about Faiz Ahamed who made a stroke filled 92. However it was Devan Jayaratne who top scored in the match with 108. Paceman Danushka had a five wicket haul. This was St. Sylvester's first tournament game.
