‘Go green’ is this year’s theme

Zahira soccer sevens

As their competition reaches its seventh edition, the organizers of Zahira Super 16 Soccer 7s, the Past Prefects’ Association (PPA) have come up with innovations to further uplift the standards of the competition. The Zahira Super 16 Soccer 7s which will be staged on October 22 at the Zahira College ground in Maradana, this year will see many add on features. The PPA proposed their new theme for this year, ‘Go Zahira, Go Green’ in an attempt to contribute their fair share towards making an effort to save the earth by opposing environmental pollution by creating awareness among the youth.

“This year we will ignore using polythene and plastic products as we look forward to make use of natural resources to all the requirements at the tournament. We hope our attempt will succeed as we expect all participating teams to assist us in this cause. We hope the competition will generate more excitement unlike the previous six years with new inclusions,” Mohamed Fazil, the president of PPA told reporters at a press conference held in Colombo on Wednesday (12).

The tournament as customary will feature 16 teams but this year a school from Chennai, India has been invited by the organizers. The tournament will be conducted in two categories where the winners of the first round matches will play in the Cup segment and the losers will step down to the Plate segment. The second round will be played entirely on a knockout basis.

To celebrate the competition’s seventh anniversary, the winner of this year’s Cup championship will receive a cash award of Rs. 70,000 in addition to the trophy. The Plate champions will receive Rs. 20,000 in cash in addition to the trophy. In total Rs. 500,000 will be spent on cash and other awards.
The Under-18 soccer teams from Ananda, De Mazenod, Hameed-Al-Husseinie, Hindu College, Holy Cross, Isipathana, Lumbini, Manipay Hindu College Jaffna, Maris Stella, Royal Colombo, St. Benedict’s, St. Joseph’s, St. Xavier’s’ Mannar, Wesley, hosts Zahira and Bawans Rajaji Vidhyasaram from Chennai, India are the 16 participants of the schools invitational tournament.
