Champs Wattala BC stumble in title defence

The Wattala Basketball Club's two-year reign as champions of the St. Eugene's five-a-side basketball tournament was brought to an unceremonious end when they were beaten 16-6 by Royal 'A' at the Police Park basketball courts yesterday.

The boys from Wattala however redeemed themselves with two wins against Colombo Priests (22- 09) and Commandos (19-10), but find themselves only in contention for the Plate Championship. The women's champions, Track Masters, also saw their hopes of defending their crown crumble by a single agonizing point, when they were beaten 13-12 by Navy 'B'.

Meanwhile, the tournament's organizers, St. Eugene's, saw their basketball players fall short against the Christ King Basketball Club by 12 points to 4 in a match plagued with errors. The high scorer for Christ King was Oshan Danasekera with 4 points while Angelo Perera led the scoring for St. Eugene's with 2 points.

St. Eugene's started the match confidently but some ill-advised three-point shooting put them under early pressure and Christ King went into half-time with a 6-1 lead. During the second half, the lead swelled further, with St. Eugene's adding to their woes with some poor free-throw shooting and careless turnovers, before eventually the match swung out of their grasp.

The tournament's men's and women's finals will be worked off today at the Police Park basketball courts.
