"Massaging is essential for sports. In order to obtain good performance, the brain has to work properly and if the muscles of the legs are supple it will enhance effectiveness. Massaging helps athletes perform effectively, in addition to physiological and medical treatments," emphasized Dr. Mendis.
The fifth batch of 60 masseurs is presently undergoing training at the ISM. According to Dr. Mendis they will graduate next year after a prompt training programme. Dr. Mendis who is also the Chairman of the National Anti-Doping Agency of Sri Lanka revealed that already many who came out of the programme are serving the armed forces.
"Thirty are already working for the Sports Medial Unit. We already have 10 regional medical units where the services of masseurs are available without cost for sportspersons. In time to come provinces, districts and schools will have the option of obtaining these services". |
