Dharsha, Harsha, Ashan and Gayan steal limelight

Speed Championship 2011 Final Round

The final round of the Speed Championship 2011 held at the Pannala motor racing track recently saw Dharsha Pathirana, S.A. Harsha, Ashan Silva and Gayan Ranatunga steal the limelight in the Formula Car events which was main attraction of the four round meet held during the course of the year.

Dharsha who had not been able to reach the winning post in any of the three previous rounds that were conducted during the year at last found the winning post when he took the first event of the day which was the Formula McLarens 1300cc (Race 1) pushing Thiwanka Wijesekera and Gayan Ranatunga to the second and third slots respectively.

One of Sri Lanka’s experienced Ford Formula driver S.A. Harsha came out on top in the Pre85 Ford Formula 1600cc event while another top driver Ashan Silva took the top spot in the Post85 event.

The second race of the Formula McLarens event was well contested with Dharsha who took the lead maintaining it until the final round of the eight lap event before engine trouble forced him to pull out when he reaching the finishing line with Gayan taking the race.

There was some fierce competition in the support events of the motor car category. Mudith Maddumarachchi a newcomer took the Mini Standard 1000cc one make event with veteran driver K. Parameswaran taking the SL-A Mini7 event.

Susantha Gunawardena took the Ford Laser/Mazda 1300cc event while Champika Silva came out as the winner of the Ladies scooter event. Sajjad Zuhair came out on top in the SL-H up to 1600cc while the SL-A up to 1050cc event saw Ajith Keerthi reaching the winning post first.

The other winners of the day in the motorcar category were Chaminda Weerasuriya (Ford Laser/Mazda 1500cc) and Darin Weerasinghe (SLGT up to 3500cc) which had only five in the fray in this popular with the notable absentees being Dinesh Deheragoda and Pasindu Peiris.

Three of the results from the six motorcycle events that were held for the day were withheld by the officials which were Race 1 and 2 of Group ‘O’ Standard up to 125cc (4stroke) and the Group ‘O’ Standard up to 250cc (4stroke). A final decision was to be taken once the bikes in the three races were scrutinized in Colombo
