Eighteen new meet records established on third day

23rd National Youth Sports Festival

Eighteen new meet records were established by end of the third day of the 23rd National Youth Sports Festival at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Diyagama, Homagama yesterday. Among the records bettered were 11 track events and seven field events as H.L.N.D. Lekamge representing Ratnapura District earned major honours as she became the first athlete of the day to renew a 15-year-old meet record. In the Over-20 Women's javelin throw Lekamge cleared 46.43 metres, bettering the existing record of 46.06 established in 1996.

Urban Youth finished the day on top as they claimed four of the records - the Boy's Under-20 high jump, Boy's Under-20 800m, Men's Over-20 long jump and Men's Over-20 high jump events. M. Dissanayake cleared 2.09 metres in the Boy's Under-20 high jump while I.D.S. Harshana clocked 1:57.14 to better the previous record of 2:00.4 in the Boy's Under-20 800m event. L.P.S. Nilanga claimed the record for Men's Over-20 long jump clearing 7.45 metres, bettering the previous record by 0.15 metres. G.L.A.S. de Peiris cleared the existing record for Men's Over-20 high jump by a narrow 0.01 meters when he managed 2.04 metres.

In the Girl's Under-20 triple jump event S.G.C. Wijesena of Kalutara recorded 14.50 metres while H.M.N.M. Siriwardena from Anuradhapura cleared 1.71 metres in the Girl's Under-20 high jump events. M.D. Dilrukshi from Gampaha cleared 5.56 metres in the Girl's Under-20 long jump event while W.K.L.A. Nimali from Hambantota powered her way to clock 2:11.12 in the Women's Over-20 800m event to claim the record. K.A.C. Jayamini from Ratnapura clocked 2:14.12 in the same event of Girl's Under-20.

W.T.K. Fernando from Kalutara erased the previous record of 12.79 metres by clearing 13.11 in the Women's Over-20 shot putt event while in the same age group R.A.D. Madumanti from Gampaha and R. Rubasinghe from Matara broke the records of high jump and triple jump respectively. Madumanti cleared 1.74 metres while Rubasinghe recorded 12.86 metres. M.I.M. Mifran from Ampara bettered his own record in the Boy's Under-20 long jump event by 0.08 metres when he recorded 7.04m yesterday.

Puttalam District clocked 42.83 seconds to better their own record of 44.10 in the Boy's Under-20 100m relay event while Matara District claimed the record in the same event for Men's Over-20 by recording 42.45 seconds. S.R.J.P. Senanayake from Kegalle clocked 25.01secs to win the Girl's Under-20 200m event while R.A.D. Madusanka from Gampaha clocked 22.20secs in the Boy's Under-20 200m event to finish off record timing.

However Ratnapura District with 33 points claimed the overall lead by the end of the third day while Urban Youth and Puttalam shared the second place with 26 points each. Nuwara Eliya and Badulla with 15 points each followed in the standings as joint third. The meet will conclude today.
