The Sunday Times of November 6 published an article on the accomplishments of St. Peter's College cricket team. In it was mentioned that one bowler had taken nearly 20 wickets in his first three matches.
I wish to do a little of boasting of my own. In my first year at St. Peter's, as a 17-year-old, I took 33 wickets: 11 for 108 vs Zahira; 9 for 57 vs St. Benedict's and 13 for 106 vs Nalanda. That was in 1944 and I finished up with 46 wickets in inter-collegiate matches. (That year St. Joseph's beat us by innings).
I went on to Captain St. Peter's in 1946 and 1947. We were Sri Lankan champions in both years. We were never beaten in 1947. We won every match outright. In our 'Big Match' vs St. Joseph's I took a rich haul of wickets. Of course a captain does not do everything on his own. We had a superb all-round team and we were fortunate to be coached by the late Russel Heyn.
