Curtin University Professor Lakshman Alles is an associate professor from the School of Economics and Finance as part of Curtin Business School. Professor Alles is currently conducting several research projects, one of which includes collaboration with researchers at the Department of Accounting at the University of Sri Jayawardenepura, Nugegoda.
This project involves research into the implication of the quality of accounting information disclosed by firms listed in the Colombo Stock Exchange in their financial reports to shareholders. The hypothesis that forms the basis for their research is that firms whose reported net income is of better quality—and therefore more reliable to investors in the share market—will have better performance in their share prices.
In one of Professor Alles’ visits to Sri Lanka in 2011, he will also collaborate with researchers at the Department of Statistics at the University of Colombo, in another separate project that focuses on retirement finance. This project is interested in determining what the financial needs of a person residing in Sri Lanka are at the time he or she retires from employment.
Taking into account a number of important factors, the researchers will consider the length of time a retiree in expected to live, the cost of living and the income they can expect to receive on savings investments. Professor Alles’ team will also consider the effect of changing economic factors on the financial needs of retirees in the future.
