Looking to the future, Gateway has taken a strategic decision to establish close relationships with a few selected universities that provide high quality education and are also reasonable with their fees. The first such institution is the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. The goodwill that Gateway has with UC has resulted in four of their top students getting 100% scholarships from UC– one for Engineering, one for Science and two for Business.
Last year, Akmal Fazleen of Gateway College, Kandy received a full scholarship. Marliese Liyanage (Management) and Amittha Upasiri (Chemical Engineering) are among the recipients of 100% scholarships for this year.
By partnering with the prestigious University of Canterbury in New Zealand, that is ranked amongst the top 2% in the world, Gateway, through its Graduate School will offer undergraduate qualifications in fields such as Engineering, Science, Mathematics, Psychology, Business Management, Human Resource Management and Marketing from February 2012. Established in 1873 by Oxford and Cambridge scholars, University of Canterbury, has a student population of 22,000, with almost 10% of them International. The University provides inspirational teaching and world-class research in a vibrant campus environment.
Gateway has also established a close relationship with University of Hong Kong that is ranked the first in Asia and the 23rd in the world. HKU awarded a 75% scholarship to Ramesh Weerakoon who achieved 4 A*s and the World Prize for Further Mathematics. The University of Hong Kong, founded in 1911, is the oldest tertiary institution in Hong Kong. The outstanding academic staff of the University is recruited through rigorous selection procedures and about 50% of them are drawn from overseas. All ten faculties and their departments provide teaching and supervision for research (MPhil and PhD) students.
As the Guest of Honour at Gateway’s recent Awards Day, Professor John Spinks of the University of Hong Kong said “ My first glimpse of Gateway College only came about two and a half years ago when we visited Sri Lanka for the very first time. We have had a relationship that has been developing very fast and what I would particularly like to pay tribute to is the very personal nature of that relationship”. He went onto say that he would like to see this very rewarding relationship continuing to the future.
Speaking on education in Asia, Professor Spinks said that there is a huge priority given to education in Asia by students and parents. The booming economy in the region, the support universities receive from the Govt. and the fact that Asia already has some of the most talented students in the world contribute to high academic achievements in region.
With many destinations such as Australia and UK getting increasingly difficult for Sri Lankan students due to increased costs and visa restrictions, there is today a trend where students are opting for newer options. In this background, institutions such as the University of Hong Kong and University of Canterbury are among the best available options. |
