Badulla, Dharmadutha Maha Vidyalaya is the biggest boys’ school in the Uva Province. It is also one of the most popular Buddhist school’s among six Buddhist schools in the island. This is the only school in Sri Lanka which has two school songs, one is written in Sanskrit language. Dhuthians are not only famous for academic successes but also for their sporting talents.

Dharmadutha M.V. had produced distinguished and renowned personalities to the nation and some of them have been honoured as pioneers of various professional fields of expertise such as Nimal Siripala Silva, Former Secretary to the President Balapatabandi, Professor of Paali language W.S.Karunarathne and the Professor in Sinhala Attanayake N.Herath of the Peradeniya University are some of them.
In 1880, the American ‘Colonel Henry Alcott’ embraced Buddhism and joined the Buddhist elite and in the process established the ‘Parama Vigngnanartha Buddhist society’ and formed Ananda College Colombo, Dharmaraja College Kandy, Mahinda College Galle through the society. During that period the ‘Dharmadutha Sangamaya’s were founded all over the country. They are also represent ‘Kaluthara Dharmadutha Sangamaya’. In 1886 Mudali D.F Gunasekara visited Badulla and joined with Buddhist elites and founded the Badulla Dharmadutha Society.
In 1923 the school was named as Dharmadutha Collage. In 1963 the college was taken over by the government. Mr. D.L Jayasinghe who was an old boy of this college was the first principal after government took over. He served as a teacher for a few years and was appointed principal.
Their mission of the school is to “build good, educated and successful children for the nation”.
The college today provides education to over 2600 students from Grade 1 to 13. The present principal of Dharmadutha College is Mr. M.M.W.De Silva. The college academic staff comprises 120, academically qualified teachers, most of them are having university degrees or diplomas and some of them are having masters as well.
Over the years, Dharmadutha College has earned its reputation in various areas of academic excellence as well as in sports.
The college owns a major reputation in the academic field. In the Grade 5 scholarship examination 54 students got through the examination this year. G.C.E. (O/L) brings in yearly credit to the school along with a few 9 A’s.
In the G.C.E. (A/L) commerce stream has brought higher achievements with district ranks. In 2005 N.D.Bandara Hettihewa was 1st in the district and since then every batch has brought in district ranks consecutively.
Dharmadutha College has a great reputation in extracurricular activities. As the education level of the school develops day by day, their sport talents too have increased and they have produced good players to the nation. Duthians are famous for Football, Chess, Rugby football, Hockey and Athletics. At present, three boys from this college are representing the Sri Lankan Football team. Kasun Jayasuriya represented the Sri Lankan team for 12 years and Mohamed Fuard represented the team for three year. The school football team won 2nd place at the All Island School Football Championship in 2011. Maduka Deeptha Lahiru won the under 20 board chess championship in the 2010. Tharindu Madushanka represented the under 13 Sri Lankan football team for the tour to Iran in 2011.
Duthians launched the first media unit in Uva Province as well.
