“Stars shine at Christmas”
‘Christmas’ is not just a day at the end of a year. It is not a holiday filled with good cheer. It is a time to turn our eyes to that “Bright Star Above”. This is what more than two hundred and fifty children of Wycherley got across to the audience on December 15th 2011 at the BMICH, ably trained and directed by a Singer of eminence, Mrs. Anagi Perera.
The curtain raiser was a rendition of perennial favourites like “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, “Silver Bells” and “Walking in the Winter Wonderland”. These being everybody’s favourites, put the audience in the right mood for Christmas. The little ones of the Elementary Section, costumed so colourfully, belted out Christmassy numbers like “All I want for Christmas”, “He’ll be coming down the Chimney”, “He’s got the Whole World” and a lovely Christmas Medley – that kept everybody’s toes a tapping. The little ones made a pretty picture with “This Little Light of Mine” – making sure that their lights were all twinkling.
The Primary Section harmonised “White Christmas”, “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”. Attired in Christmas colours of Red, Green, Silver and Gold, they looked so elegant on stage, to get the spirit of Christmas into the hearts of the audience.
There were two short plays – “The Burglar’s Christmas” and the “Nativity Play” done by the cast from the Primary and Junior Sections respectively.
The Junior Section had a dance to the music of “Felize Navidaz” which had an immediate response from the audience, who clapped to keep time to the music. They harmoniously sang “Go tell it on the Mountain” and a perennial favourite “Jingle Bell Rock” which captivated many a heart.
The School Choir’s voicing of “Ding Dong Merrily on High” and “Do you hear what I hear?” was delivered in perfect harmony, displaying the fact that the children had been fine tuned into four part singing. The entire programme, as always, had a mixture of all students, who wanted to participate in it. That is what Wycherley encourages - to give a place to those who want to take part. It touched the hearts of the entire audience when the two hundred and fifty children sang out “Joy to the World”. It gave everybody a lift to their spirits to keep the Christmas Light aglow. The real true meaning of Christmas is “Peace on Earth, Good Will to all Men”.
The greatest blessing that mankind can know is that if we lived Christmas each day, as we should, and make it our aim to always do good, then we’ll know the great joy of Peace on Earth. That is the message that Wycherley rang out to the children that evening. |
