Badulla Sirisumana Maha Vidyalaya is quite a well known mixed school which is situated a few miles off Badulla town. It’s environment is calm and quite. The surroundings enable the students to learn in a serene atmosphere.
During a time when so many Methodist schools opened all over the Island, Rev. Shasthracharya Panditha Hunuketipitiye Pagnanalankara Himi of Lindamulla Sirisumanaramaya made a huge effort to start a Buddhist school in the province. As a result, he established the Bd/Lindamulla Primary School in 1952 with 22 students under the leadership of Mr. Andres Palagasinghe at the temple premises.
After ten years in order to accommodate the growing student population, in 1962 they obtained the present premises and registered the institution as Hingurugamuwa Sirisumana Vidyalaya. Much has changed during over the years and now it has become Sirisumana Maha Vidyalaya.
They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2002 on a grand scale by organizing an inter-schools football tournament and a “Pirith Sadjayana”.
At present the leading reins of the school is in the hands of Mr.H.G.Jayatissa (BA./PGDEM/ SLPS 2 I) with nearly 66 teachers providing quality education for more than more than 800 students. The vice principal is Mr. Nalin J. Dissanayake.
The students of the school are mainly from the surrounded villages. With the help of their dedicated staff, Sirrisumana M.V. has improved quite a lot in their curricular and extracurricular activities during the recent times. Yearly the students of grade 05 has gradually improved in grade 05 scholarship examinations. In 2011, eleven students got through the examination while B.M.R.Sachith Dilshan gained the highest marks of 179.
Recently, the school has been showing very good academic records at G.C.E.(O/L) and G.C.E.(A/L) examinations. The school was placed fifth in the Badulla Division in G.C.E.(O/L) examination, 2007 as their average passing rate. Yearly they have been enjoying more than 60% of G.C.E.(O/L) results. As it is a 1C school, they teach Arts and Commerce for G.C.E.(A/L) and annually a number of students enter the Universities.Since 1984, the students of Sirisumana M.V. have shown their colours in extracurricular activities as well. They were brilliant in sports. In 1985 the girls’ hockey team emerged champions in the Uva province.
At the All Island Gymnastic Championship, a student of this school emerged as one of the best among five in 1988. Neranjani Manikpura is an outstanding athlete who placed first in All Island Marathon in 1990/1991. At present the under 17 Rugby and Hockey teams are first in the Province having participated in All Island championships.
Not only in sports, they have also done well at language day, art, music and dance competition as well. Ishini Thakshila was placed first in the Uva Province at the Eastern music competition in 2011.
They are also involved in “Global School Partnership” conducted by the British Council and “The Delphside Primary School of UK has become their partner school.
Behind all these success, there is a person to be introduced. She is a great but poor parent Mrs. Nandawathy Senevirathna who has been working in the school as a volunteer for 22 years. She first came to the school to be with her child and from that day onwards she was with the primary students. She enjoys serving these small children even without being paid for it.
Being a village school, Sirisumana M.V. is providing a great service to students by competing with the leading schools in the area. They have a very pleasant environment to have a culture based higher education centre. They are looking forward with anticipation to have such a centre in the near future. |
