Sexually abused and injured child dies

By Palitha Ariyawansa Badulla Correspondent

A five-year-old boy has died as a result of repeated physical and sexual abuse by his father, say the Badulla Police. The child died while in the Intensive Care Unit of the Badulla Hospital. It is alleged that the child, M. Haathim, was repeatedly sexually assaulted and tortured by his father in the presence of the father’s mistress. Medical investigations suggest that the child had been sodomised.

The boy was unconscious when he was brought to the Bandarawela Hospital by his father’s mistress. The woman said the boy had been stung by wasps. The child was rushed to the Diyatalawa Hospital.
Judicial Medical Officer Dr. P. B. Subasinghe found cuts, burns and teeth marks on the child’s body. The injuries appeared to have been inflicted some time ago.

Dr. Subasinghe ordered that the child be transferred to the Badulla Hospital. The police have arrested the father and his mistress. Both were remanded till February 29 by Bandarawela magistrate, A. Wickremasinghe.
