A Sevenagala Hospital doctor and a minor employee charged for attempted murder of another doctor in the same hospital have been interdicted with immediate effect, a senior medical official said yesterday.
Sevenagala Regional Health Director, Dr. H. S. Adhikari said the interdiction was temporary until the ongoing police investigation was concluded.
He said the suspect doctor will also be called to make a statement at an inter-department inquiry that is currently underway.
The two suspects were alleged to have spiked the water supply of another doctor with a pesticide known as Chlrophenoxy with the aim of causing serious harm.
According to Dr. Adhikari, the pesticide if consumed over time could lead to serious lung diseases and also cause neurological disorders.
Earlier the minor employee had allegedly told police that the suspect doctor had instructed him to introduce the pesticide into the victim’s water tank at his official quarters situated in the hospital premises.
The doctor has denied the allegations.
Meanwhile the victim, Dr. Chaminda Withanage is undergoing treatment at the National Hospital in Colombo as investigations continue to ascertain the motive for the alleged poisoning, officials said. Dr. Withanage was the District Medical Officer (DMO) for Sevenagala.
Investigations are being conducted by the Sevenagala Police heade by Chief Inspector Nilantha Bandara. |
