Thanga growing in stature

Nadaraja Thangaraja growing in confidence after his sensational win in Delhi India followed-up with a 4 stroke win in the 51st Pakistan National Amateur Golf Championship concluded last Saturday in Lahore.

'Raja' played remarkable Golf over the 4 Rounds to be the only player under Par for the Championship at 1 under. The Runner-up was 3 over par 4 strokes behind the Champion Raja.

The Sri Lankan two man Team of N. Thangaraja and N. Ranga also won the International Team Event overcoming Pakistan and Bangladesh. The International tie between Sri Lanka and Pakistan played annually for the J.R. Jayawardene Trophy and the Zia-Ul-Haq Trophy was shared 'one' each.
Thangaraja and Ranga were accompanied by the newly elected President of the SLGU Ana Punchihewa as the Manager of the team on Tour.

Raja who was featured in an exclusive interview with the Sunday Times previously acknowledged many who gave him a hand to excel at the game of Golf, gave a flowing tribute to the President Ana Punchihewa who as manager of the team had motivated and urged Thangaraja all the way to the Championship.The Pakistan National Amateur golf title is very significant as it is an ominous tournament to win defeating the very strong local challenge. Furthermore this victory gives the New SLGU President Punchihewa a winning start to his term in office and an inspiration to accomplish his vision of Excellence by 2020 for Sri Lanka.

Major General Srinath Wins in Nuwara-Eliya.
The Nuwara-Eliya golf course immaculately turned out over the last week had very competitive tournaments with several Colombo golfers challenging the local players for the Trophies.
The opening day brightened-up by the sponsorship of Car Mart Limited saw local doctor Janaka Gallangoda winning the Car Mart Golf Tournament with 38 points played in the Stableford Points Format. Dr Janaka playing off a 18 handicap overcame the Runner-up Rohith Silva a 23 handicapper by a single point. In a field of 35 players Gihan Wickramasinghe collected 35 points off an eighteen handicap to be the 2nd Runner-up.

Progressively improved golfer Major General Srinath Rajapakse playing off an eight handicap won the A.R. Aitken Cup returning the Best Aggregate Gross Score over two Rounds.
Major General also returned the Best Nett Score of 71 to win the Captain's Cup and Prize given by Glenn Mathew the NEGC Captain this year defeating the incumbent Royal Colombo Captain Priath Fernando who returned a Nett 73 to be the Runner-up.

The President's Prize gifted by Veteran Planter, Golfer and reigning President Vernon Tissera was Won by Sunil Udalagama with a Nett 71 beating Dr Janaka.
The holiday golf had it's challenges in a thoroughly packed and overloaded city and the sporadic showers of blessing in chilly wet conditions. However, local knowledge held sway overall with the NEGC committee member and the local Dr carrying away the trophies.

CAPTAIN'S CUP- Best Nett Score 13th April: Winner- Maj.Gen.Srinath Rajapakse (8 H'cap)- 71. Runner-up- Priath Fernando (11 H'cap) – 73.

PRESIDENT'S PRIZE- Best Nett Score 14th April: Winner- Sunil Udalagama (17 H'cap) – 71. Runner-up - Dr. Janaka Gallangoda (18 H'cap) - 72

A.R.Aitken Cup- 2 Round Aggregate Gross Score: Winner - Maj.Gen.Srinath Rajapakse 171. Runner-up - Rohan J Perera 179

Car Mart Golf Tournament 2012- Stableford Basis: Winner- Dr. Janaka Gallangoda(18 H'cap) 38 points. 1st Runner-up - Rohith Silva(23 H'cap) 37 points. 2nd Runner-up - Gihan Wickramasinghe(18 H'cap) 35 points.
