Baron turns 82
Baron de Livera, power boat racer, water sports enthusiast, golfer, cricketer, hockey player and life saver turned 82 on Friday. In Baron’s own words, “By any yardstick it is an event to celebrate.”

Baron earned a name as a daredevil power boat racer with his ability to make the boat whiz through the water. He was also a President of the Power Boat Association for many years and was also the President of the Windsurfing Association.

Lankan netballers go down under
A 17-member Sri Lanka Netball team led by Asia’s tallest player Tharshini Sivalingam will take wing to Australia on a two-month coaching stint tomorrow. The co-captain Gayathri Lankatilleke is poised on 99 international matches and is hoping to reach the hundred-mark when the Asian Netball Championship is staged in Sri Lanka in August.

The choice of Australia is not a surprise because the consultant coach Susan Gaudion is based in Australia. Further, they are the defending World Champs and their coaching methods are very up to date. Sri Lanka finished 14th at the World Championship. Affable Dineli Pitigalaarachchi is on her maiden tour as manager of the national team. Hyacinth Wijesinghe, Sri Lanka’s national coach and assistant coach Deepthi Alwis will also be on tour. - AK

Naveed wins tennis title
Mahaweli Reach Hotel conducted the inaugural Junior Tennis Championship recently. Veteran tennis coach Tissa Ratnayake functioned as tournament director at this event where over fifty youngsters between the ages of 11 to 19 took part. The competitors, from the districts of Kandy and Matale, showed great enthusiasm and talent to match.

Naveed Mohamed of Zahira National School Matale won a triple crown by annexing the Under-19, 17 and 15 titles. The presentation of awards was held under the patronage of Jayantha Panabokke, the managing director of Mahaweli Reach Hotel. Taking into account the demand for participation and the resounding success of the initial tournament, the Hotel hopes to make this a part of their annual calendar of events. This would give the youth in the central province an opportunity to showcase their skills and enhance their game. -AK

KIA to drive Royal Rugby-2012

Korean car brand KIA will be the sponsors of the defending Singer League Champions Royal College in 2012. The outfit will be led by dashing fly half and ace place kicker Arshad Jamaldeen who will have some outstanding senior in their rankings. Lads from Reid Avenue will go flat out this season to regain the Bradby Shiled which they lost to Trinity last year.

Speaking to Daily Mirror at a press conference held recently Chairman of Royal Rugby Advisory Committee Jehan Canagaretna said that “we will have 9 coloursmen and the side will be coached by Bilal Yusuf with Asanga Seneviratne assisting. Forwards will be looked after by Dunstan De Silva. First Leg of the Bradby Shield will take place in Colombo on June 16 and the Return Leg in Kandy on June 30 at Pallekele.

Estimated cost for the season from Junior Rugby to the top level at Royal will be in the region of 14.8 million rupees. Seniors in the ranking of Iroshan de Alwis (Vice Captain), Lahiru Pavithra, Wasim Bawa, Ijas Boran, Ravi Dassanayake, Andrew Siriwardena, Damian Ratwatte, Madushan Kularatne and Rimzy Jamaldeen are all out to give a good account of themselves.
