Trinity huffed and puffed their way to an unimpressive 25 points (2 Tries, 5 Penalties) to 19 (2 Goals, one Try) win over Science College on their home grounds at Pallekelle. The winners led 11-5 at the break.
For the most part, there was no exciting rugby by both teams. The Science lads were all over the Trinitians in the last 15 minutes or so. What they lacked in sophistication and finesse, they made up for in ample measure by their never-say-die attitude. They probably made better use of the chances that came their way.
Randika Alwis opened the securing the bal from a line out and then powering his way over the line.
A few moments later, after they had applied plenty of pressure on the defense, winger Maduranga ran round the last defender and touched down to equalize.
Both kickers missed easy penalties but Karunatilleke was on target with two to put his team 11-5 ahead at the break. Two Science players were sin binned by Referee Dilroy Fernando within minutes of each other. But Trinity failed to capitalize.
Tharinda Ratwatte, the fly half, made an incisive break in the Science 22 and went over the line. (16-5). Two more Karunatilleke penalties put Trinity in clover as they enjoyed a 17 point lead.
However the gutsy visitors started their fight back when skipper Kanchana Perera picked up from a scrum and dashed through a bemused defense for a classic number eight try. The scrum half set it up by dummying a pass. (22-12)
Science’s last ditch efforts were rewarded when fly half S.D. Gomes went over near the end to make the final score 25-19.
Trinity’s defensive work was good, but the handling was poor. A slight drizzle at the start may have caused this.
