The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Open University of Sri Lanka is one of the six departments belonging to the Faculty of Natural Sciences, which offers three disciplines namely Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Computer Science for the Bachelor of Science Degree programme. In respect of a new focus, the department initiated a certificate programme in computer networks and security in July 2010 and is now in the process of starting the third batch of the same.
This certificate programme is intended to provide a good technical knowledge in setting up computer networks and managing network services from scratch. Students will be benefited from the course as it touches the two widespread areas of managing network devices (network engineering) with secure techniques and configuring computer systems (systems engineering) with sufficient depth in both theoretical and practical aspects, a departmental spokesman said.
It can be followed by any person with a pass in the English language at GCE Ordinary Level Examination or with an equivalent qualification. The duration of the programme is 06 months (Saturdays - full day). Lectures are conducted in both English and Sinhala media while the printed course material and examinations are only in English medium.
