Hundreds of visitors to the historic Sigiriya rock came under a wasp attack yesterday, prompting authorities to temporarily close the site, police said.
At least 50 people were admitted to the Sigiriya hospital while 17 victims who were in a serious condition were sent to the Dambulla hospital.
Following the attack at the Lion’s Paw, police stopped visitors from making the ascent while security forces personnel brought local and foreign visitors stranded on top of the rock to safety.
Yesterday’s attack was the second wasp attack in three days. On Thursday more than 35 people, including six foreigners, were hospitalized with sting injuries.
Villagers said the prevailing dry weather, strong winds and noisy crowds usually disturbed the wasps.
Police last night said the site would be opened to visitors today as usual. They advised visitors to take precautions and not disturb the wasps. |
