Another May Day has come and gone… leaving trails of environment
pollution and discarded placards of global leaders.
Our photographer Indika Handuwela captured a series of photographs
which show the day set apart for commemorating worker struggles and their rights and demands has lost its significance.
Unfortunately today 'workers' are lured to rallies via lunch packets and drinks which are on offer.
State resources too are widely used
Employees of Airport and Aviation Services -a state institution- were involved in putting up posters and distributing placards for a particular rally.
At the end of the day what was left were polluted streets and lowly paid workers clearing the debris strewn all around
Their problems remain unsolved and their demands unheard.

Business as usual: A worker passes by a rally, having no place in an event that is supposed to bring his struggles to the forefront. |

Workers unite: but only for the 'Buth packets' (packets of rice) and drinks on offer |
