Germany has stepped in to promote renewable-energy based power generation in Sri Lanka as a solution to the increasing demand for electricity against limited energy resources in the country, German Ambassador Dr. Juergen Morhard revealed. He told the Minister of Power and Energy Ranjith Siyambalpitiya during a meeting in Colombo on Thursday that his country will provide Euro 200,000 to promote renewable-energy and create awareness on energy conservation among the people. An agreement for this purpose will be signed soon, he said, adding that growing demand requires significant development of both thermal and renewable energy-based power generation in the island. Minister Siyambalapitiya expressed the belief that the German assistance will intensify the discourse on suitable renewable energy generation in Sri Lanka. (Bandula)
