Sri Lanka Tourism Minister confident no tax burden on toursim

Sri Lanka’s Tourism Minister John Amaratunga said on Wednesday that that there is a possibility that the tourism industry would not be burdened with an additional tax detrimental to the sector. “I don’t think that there would be any additional burdens on the sector,” the minister told the Business Times on the tax issues highlighted by the industry to the government lately.

He said he believed the concerns of the industry had been accepted by the government.

The tourism industry through Minister Amaratunga had submitted a letter to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe indicating concerns that the tourism sector would be further burdened should the Business Turnover Tax (BTT) be imposed on them, replacing the current VAT.

They had also requested the government to allow a grace period of at least three years before introducing such, new taxes. (SD)
