‘AMDT Showcase 2017’, an exhibition organized by the Academy of Multimedia Design and Technology (AMDT), was certainly not short of talent this year.  The event which took place at the Ramada Hotel, Colombo on Sunday (July 2), featured displays such as animation, art, fashion, graphics, 3D, set design, motion graphics, films, visual effects (VFX), photography, branding, user experience (UX) design and games.

It was quite clear that by the end of the day, the students had let their creativity run riot, even managing to impress veteran film maker Chandram Rathnam.

Speaking at the event Mr. Chandram Rathnam was so encouraged by the displays, that he offered to provide the equipment necessary to produce a film, to any first time director at the academy.  “I don’t want any credit on the screen for it. It’s an offer to all the students, because I was inspired today by seeing your work.”

The veteran director, who is currently anticipating the release of his new production, ‘According to Matthew’, also added that the exhibition had motivated him to produce some newer trailers for the movie. “When I saw some of the stuff, which your students had done today, I was quite inspired by it. And I think we’re going to give the opportunity for some of you to work on the projects,” he said.

He encouraged the students to pursue their talents in the film industry, adding that today, unlike his time, the opportunities are endless. He explained, the way forward is for students to expose their talents to the industry by working at a firm or on a project.  “A young man can film something on his phone today and showcase it. During our time there was no way to do that. A lot of talent has just passed us by in the earlier generations,” he said.
