The Cabinet of Ministers has given the approval to publish amendments to the Prevention and Terrorism Act via a gazette and to present to the Parliament.
Previously, the Cabinet approved introducing amendments to the Prevention Of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act (No. 48 of 1979) and the Legal Draftsman's Department was instructed to draft amendments. According to the Cabinet paper, amendments have been approved by the Attorney General.
Pressure has been mounting on the government to repeal the Act both by activists here and international human rights organisations with uproar against arresting protestors under the PTA.
