Ceylon Tea production reached a 3-year high of 262 million kg at the end of last year, up by 2.4 per cent compared to 2023 production of 256 million kg.
Asia Siyaka Report highlighted that production gains came primarily from the Mid Grown sector which rose a sharp 12.5 per cent year on year 2023 from 42.3 to 47.6 million kg, recording a healthy 5 million kg gain.
Low Growns rose 2.4 per cent from 155.1 to 158.8 million kg in 2024. High Growns that recorded excessive rain early in Q2, declined 5 per cent from 58.6 to 55.7 million kg.
These production gains were achieved despite irregular climatic conditions and modest fertiliser application by the smallholder sector who account for up to 75 per cent of national green leaf production.
The report noted that if growing conditions remain stable Sri Lanka tea production could exceed 257 million kg in 2025. (SD)
