The concessionary terms for interest free loans for students following degree programmes in non-state universities have been increased.
According to the decision of the Cabinet dated 2022-08-22, discussions have been held between the Bank of Ceylon, the Treasury and the Ministry of Education with respect to the continuation of the interest-free loan scheme given to students who are pursuing degree courses in non-state higher education institutions.
The students, after completing their course will be able to complete the payment within eight years.
They will also be able to pay the prescribed interest under the monthly interest rate (AWPLR + 1 percent) added to the existing weighted average loan rate of the coming year.
The proposal presented by the Minister of Education to amend the MOU was approved by the Council of Ministers.
