The Matara Magistrate's Court has granted bail to suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon.
The Court released Mr Tennakoon on two sureties of Rs. 1 million each.
Mr Tennakoon had been in remand custody since March 19 after surrendering to court over the shooting incident in front of the W 15 hotel in Weligama on December 31, 2023. The shooting resulted in the death of an officer from the Colombo Crimes Division. The suspended IGP had been evading arrest for nearly 20 days until he finally surrendered to court.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is due to vacate his official residence at Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo this morning, a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) source said.
The Presidents’ Entitlements (Repeal) Bill was passed by a majority of 150 in parliament today. However the opposition MP’s were absent during the voting.
