The dispute over the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) General Secretary position was set to end up in Courts after Minister Mahinda Amaraweera today insisted he was still holding the position.
Minister Amaraweera refusing to accept the new General Secretary has written to the Elections Commissioner that he was still holding the post.
He has asked the Elections Commission not accept any other nominee as the UPFA General Secretary.
Minister Amaraweera said he had only seen news reports that he had been replaced as the UPFA General Secretary, but not officially informed.
The Central Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) last week decided to appoint former MP Thilanga Sumathipala as the General Secretary.
The dispute will now have to be resolved in courts and the Elections Commission be informed, an official of the Commission said.
The SLFP central committee last week decided to remove Amaaraweera from the post of UPFA General-Secretary.
They also decided to remove Nimal Siripala de Silva, Mahinda Amaraweera, Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Jagath Pushpakumara and Chamara Sampath Dassanayake from all positions held by them in the party and stripped them of their SLFP central committee membership.
