A lone wild elephant has died due to complications after being struck in the mud of the Periyavilluwa Lake in the Karuwalagaswewa area, wildlife officials said.
A 35-year-old wild elephant, more than 8 feet tall, was travelling in a flooded area during the early hours of today where its feet got stuck in the mud.
However, Karuwalagaswewa Site Wildlife Officer Mr. D. Ramasinghe said that after getting stuck in the mud, it took a lot of effort to come out alone. The wildlife officials further mentioned that he died owing to some complications afterwards.
Wildlife Veterinarian Dr. Isuru Kottagoda is set to conduct the post-mortem examination of the elephant this afternoon (02).
