Farmers in Mannar staged a massive protest in Mannar- Madawachchi street today against the government's hastily taken decision to ban chemical fertiliser and demanded that government should provide them chemical fertiliser to engage in farming immediately.
174 Farmers Federation in Mannar collectively organized the protest to show their agitation against the fertiliser ban. The farmers alleged that the sudden decision put their livlihood at risk as the farming community was not consulted before taking such a decision.
The protesting farmers also pointed out while they welcome the organic farming method, it should be carried out in a phase-out model rather than a hastily taken decision.
They also stressed that this would create a food crisis in the country as yield under organic farming would be nearly half compared to the usage of chemical fertiliser. (Pix by N. Thayalan)
